The Mothers’ Union

The purpose and aims of the Mothers’ Union is to support marriage, and Christian family life.  The Mothers’ Union is a Christian organisation that promotes the well being of families world-wide.  There are Mothers' Union groups in 76 countries and they all strive to commit to improve family life all through practical action and prayer.

Projects range from small scale farming initiatives in Uganda to a network of family support groups in places such as prisons and contact centres around the United Kingdom.  The special thing about all these projects is that they involve women and men working in their own community wherever they live. In Lancing, for example, the Mothers' Union is running Parenting Courses.

The Mothers’ Union started in 1876 in the village of Old Alresford in Hampshire.  The central constitution, which governs the running of the Society, was first drawn up in 1896 and in 1926 a Royal Charter was granted.  In June 1995 the Queen in Privy Council approved the third constitution in the Society’s history.  Each diocese also has its own constitution.

Membership is open to men and women who have been baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity and support the Aim and Objects of the Mothers' Union.
