St Michael and All Angels Lancing

Bereavement

Father Barry is willing to conduct funeral services for deceased residents of St Michael's Parish, either in church or at a cemetery or crematorium chapel.

If you would like Father Barry Carter to conduct the service at the funeral, you will need to ask your funeral director for him when discussing the service.

Telephone: 01903 753653

Fr. Barry will also conduct funeral services at a cemetery or crematorium chapel in any case where the person arranging the funeral specially asks for him.

If he is not available for some reason, he will find another priest who will look after the service for you. This priest will then get in touch with you and conduct the service. He will then report to Fr Barry and provide him with your contact details.

Before the funeral

Father Barry (or another priest acting on his behalf) will contact you to arrange a meeting to discuss the service. At this meeting, he will usually help you to put together a tribute to the person who has died, to be used at the service.

This will help to make the service as personal as possible, and ensure that everything that is necessary to say is said.

After the funeral

If you live in St Michael's Parish, one of our Bereavement Pastoral Assistants will call on you later. Our Bereavement Pastoral Assistants (BPAs) have completed a rigorous training course with Worthing Bereavement Care in how to support people at times of grief and loss.

Our BPAs can arrange further support sessions for you, if you would like someone to talk things over with for a time.

Burial of cremated remains

You may arrange to have cremated remains buried in St Michael's Garden of Remembrance, either in an existing plot or in a new one. You may ask your funeral director to arrange this for you, or contact Fr Barry directly. The fee for the burial of cremated remains in a churchyard is currently £81.

A record is kept of all burials of cremated remains, with details of the positions of the plots. No memorials, vases or other permanent containers are permitted. Small posies or flower arrangements may be left on the grass, to be removed after a few days.

Time to remember

Each year, in the autumn, there is service for bereaved people and families at St Michael's Church.

Our BPAs will deliver invitations to people for the first two years after the funeral.

During the service, you can light a candle to remember a loved one who has died. Afterwards, we have tea and cake in the Church Hall.

Other priests who have conducted funeral services on behalf of St Michael's Parish are invited to the service and they come if they can.
